Forest Watch

Friends of the Bitterroot is paying attention to what happens on our forests. We appreciate hearing your observations. How are timber sales, recreation, fires, prescribed fires, and roads affecting wildlife, wild places and the climate? You can help by reporting anything you have seen on the forest that jeopardizes wildlife, watersheds, and the forest ecysystem. All reports will remain anonymous unless you specify otherwise.

Fall of 2023

Prescribed burning during Stagnant Air Advisory and Strong high pressure.

Sadly, the Forest Service conducted pile burning during strong high pressure and throughout a 4 day Stagnant Air Advisory for the Valley. Air in Darby exceeded health standards, Please read our report on this occurance and the reaction of both the BNF and the DEQ.

2022 The Blodgett/Mill fire was used as an excuse to deforest and subsidize timber without environmental review. The supposed "fuel break" did not connect to the firelines.

2021 Trail Creek Fire was used as an excuse to deforest and subsidize timber without environmental review

The 2021 trail creek fire was used as an excuse to cut, sell, and salvage log even after the fire was no longer a threat. 17,213 tons of logs are up for bid as a result of fire mitigation far from the fire.
